How to Measure PD With a Ruler

  • Get a millimeter ruler and sit or stand in front of a mirror.
  • Look straight ahead and put the ruler horizontally in front of your nose.}
  • Measure the distance between the centers of each pupil to the center of your nose bridge individually.
  • Record both measurements as your dual PD value, noting the right eye (OD) measurement first, followed by the left eye (OS) measurement.
  • If both measurements are the same, you have a single PD. In this case, add the measurements together to obtain your single PD value.
  • Repeat the process a few times to ensure accuracy.

PD Measurement FAQs

Single PD is one total number across both eyes, while dual PD separates the right and left eye measurements for more precise lens placement.

Single PD is the combined measurement of the distance between each pupil and the bridge of the nose when the individual distances are equal. Dual PD refers to the measurement of the distance between the centers of each pupil, also measured separately for each eye (OD and OS).

For bifocal and progressive lenses, two PD values are needed. In these cases, Yesglasses recommends getting your PD directly from your eye care professional.

The average pupillary distance for adults is between 54 mm and 74 mm. The average pupillary distance for kids is 43 mm and 54 mm.

You can measure your own PD with a ruler and a mirror. Be sure to note which eye you are measuring, read the ruler properly in your reflection, and take multiple measurements to check for accuracy. We highly recommend letting Carfia measure your PD for you!
